Umbrion's Isle Hunt
Posted on April 19, 2001 in UncategorizedDay 248, Year 541 of the Ascendancy
I stepped out of the library today, after putting some finishing touches on my journal
of the Foot Hills expedition, and found quite an amazing sight. There
was a congregation of mystics in town! There was an assorted number of
Journeymen and Apprentices, not to mention three full Mystics. Our
Guild really seems to be expanding! I was quite concerned that this
mystical presence would cut into my own business, but I needn’t have
worried at all. The momment I sat myself down, I received numerous
requests to let people into Dal’Noth. I happily obliged, and then my
real adventures began.
After letting some people into ‘Noth, I went
hunting in the Lily Pond with my clan mate Viper, and his friend Ashra.
Crazy sylvans, those two are– they hunted in the Lily Pond, with no
healer at all! I was a bit worried that we might run into a LSW or
something, but luckily, none of use fell. We hunted for a while, until
Viper received an invitation to visit Umbrion’s Isle(aka The Isle of
Lyfelidae). Ashra decided to head for the library then, and I decided
to tag along with Viper.
It turned out though, that a couple things were
necessary for a UI raid. One, was an empty barrel, and the other was
two pieces of wood. It seems that these two things are necessary to
construct a boat to leave Umbrion’s Isle. I had neither of these
things, so I stopped by town to purchase them. It was easy enough to
purchase two pieces of wood(for 5 coins apiece), but no one seemed to
be selling any empty barrels. That forced me to stop by the brewery,
and purchase the cheapest cask of beer that they had– some lager. I
then headed to Centaur’s Isle, where the UI party was assembling, and I
drained the cask of lager, with some help from my companions.
As soon as everyone in the party had the necessary
materials for the raid, Urgelt began to explain some of the basics
about Umbrion’s Isle. This consisted mainly of draw tactics, in which
one exile would draw hostile beasts from other snells, and thus control
the flow of deadly beasts. We were also instructed to stay together at
all times, and not to wander off without the group. Urgelt then divided
our party into two groups, and we headed off towards the Isle of
Lyfelidae.
Leonin broke down the illusions on the north side
of the isle, and we entered as one. We listened to the directions that
Urgelt issued to us, and we managed to paddle our way to the eastern
shore of the island. We then disembarked from our boats, and began our
adventure on Umbrion’s Isle.
The whole island is fraught with many dangerous
critters, especially the cats called the Lyfelidae, but even the rats
can be dangerous. The Lyfelidae are definately some of the strangest of
animals, though. During the day time, the Lyfelidae look like ordinary
cats, and walk on their fours. However, at night, the Lyfelidae
transform into powerful man-beasts, that walk on two legs.
Anyway, the first thing that we had to do once we
landed on the isle, was to fill our empty barrels with tar. To do this,
we had to reach a strange cave by the mountains, and we had to use
Urgelt’s aforementioned tactics to get us there. We slowly worked our
ways from snell to snell, carefully luring critters, and vanquishing
the deadly Lyfelidae. Finally, after an hour or so of venturing, we
succeeded in reaching the tar filled cave. Then, one by one, we made a
dash to the pool of tar, and filled our barrels with some of it. We had
to watch out for a group of lava walkers though, who staunchly guarded
their precious tar.
We then had to travel underground, which involved
dropping through hollow trees and fighting off deadly spiders. After we
exited the underground, we headed for the north shore of the isle.
Along the way, we saw Umbrion’s Castle, and found a whole bunch of free
barrels there. We also had to fight our way past some pretty odd
monsters, like the alien creatures pictured below.
We were able to overcome these foes with few
losses, thanks to the many talented exiles present, and the strong
leadership of Urgelt. Night soon decended upon us, and the Lyfelidae
morphed into their man forms, but we were still able to overcome them.
We slowly worked our way north, and finally, we saw a cave, inhabited
by the hermit Wyeth. Wyeth’s tale is a sad one: he was long ago ship
wrecked on Umbrion’s Isle, and was chased by Umbrion’s guards into the
cave of the north. All his companions have long since died, and he now
resides in the cave by himself. Anyway, Wyeth was kind enough to make
us rafts out of our wood and tar, and we all lined up to have our rafts
made.
It seemed that our adventure had come to an end,
and that we could all leave the isle on a happy note, but fate can be
cruel sometimes. Just as we began to wrap things up, and leave the
isle, several stinging beetles spawned within the cave, and I was
struck down by their powerful mandibles. Since all of the healers had
already left the isle, Urgelt was forced to chain me into the ocean.
However, in doing so, I missed the experience bonus that one receives
for navigating the isle successfully. Dang, what a waste of wood and
money. 🙁
